In Liu Cixin’s The Dark Forest, civilizations in the universe face a brutal calculus. Any civilization that reveals its position gets destroyed by a more advanced one. The rational strategy: stay silent. Hide. Never broadcast.

Janko, creator of the Rye programming language, argues that the internet has entered its own dark forest phase. His March 2026 essay, “The Cognitive Dark Forest,” makes a case that deserves serious attention from anyone building intellectual property in the open.

The argument is straightforward. When AI platforms ingest public content as training data, every published idea becomes an input to someone else’s model. The blog post you write today trains the system that competes with you tomorrow. The open-source contribution you share gets absorbed into a commercial product that never credits you. The forum answer you give becomes a capability inside a tool that charges others for the same knowledge.

Publishing, in this framing, is exposure. And the rational response is what Cixin’s civilizations chose: go dark.

The early internet rewarded openness

This was not always the dynamic. The internet that produced GitHub, Stack Overflow, personal blogs, and open-source communities operated on a different economic logic. You shared knowledge. Others used it. Your reputation grew. Opportunities followed. The exchange was indirect but real: generosity built career capital.

That logic depended on a specific condition: the cost of executing on someone else’s idea was high. Knowing how to build a distributed system and actually building one were separated by months of engineering effort. Ideas were cheap. Execution was expensive. Sharing ideas freely was rational because execution was the bottleneck.

AI compressed that distance. When execution costs approach zero, the idea itself becomes the scarce resource. And sharing scarce resources without compensation is charity, not strategy.

The absorption asymmetry

The problem is not that AI learns from public content. Humans always did that too. The problem is the asymmetry of scale.

A human reading your blog post might apply one insight to their next project. An AI platform ingests your post alongside millions of others, extracts patterns across all of them, and produces capabilities that no single contributor could have built. The statistical clustering Janko describes is not a metaphor. Platforms can detect which ideas cluster together across thousands of prompts before the people prompting realize they are contributing to the same emergent concept.

The cognitive dark forest extends this insight: when sharing any innovation publicly feeds competitors’ training data, the rational response is secrecy. That secrecy erodes the open ecosystem that built the industry in the first place.

The resistance paradox

Janko identifies a genuinely uncomfortable dynamic. Resistance to AI absorption becomes training data for AI systems. Write an essay arguing against data extraction? The essay itself gets scraped, indexed, and used to train models that can generate arguments about data extraction.

This is not a theoretical concern. Anti-AI sentiment expressed publicly becomes part of the corpus. The very act of articulating why platforms should not absorb your work teaches those platforms how to respond to that objection.

The paradox does not mean resistance is futile. It means resistance through publication alone is insufficient. Publishing your objections to an extractive system, on a platform owned by that system, using tools trained by that system, is not a strategy. It is a gesture.

What this means for organizations

The cognitive dark forest is not a reason to stop publishing. It is a reason to publish deliberately.

Organizations that treat all knowledge the same (either fully open or fully closed) are making a governance error. The question is not “should we share?” but “what should we share, with whom, through what channels, under what terms?”

This is knowledge governance. It is not new. Pharmaceutical companies have always managed the boundary between published research and proprietary formulations. Defense contractors separate fundamental research from classified applications. Law firms publish thought leadership while keeping client strategies confidential.

What is new is that AI makes the boundary harder to maintain. A detailed technical blog post about your infrastructure architecture gives competitors more than marketing visibility. It gives their AI systems training data about your approach. A conference talk about your novel methodology does not just inspire attendees. It feeds the models that will offer that methodology to your competitors’ customers next quarter.

The strategic calculus has three components. First, what knowledge builds your reputation without exposing defensible IP? Publish that aggressively. Second, what knowledge represents genuine competitive advantage? Protect it with the same rigor you protect trade secrets. Third, what knowledge sits in the gray zone? That requires judgment, not a blanket policy.

Open-source projects face this existentially. The value proposition of open source was always “we give away the code, we sell the expertise.” When AI can absorb the expertise from the code, documentation, and community discussions, the business model needs revision. Not abandonment. Revision.

Governance, not secrecy

The dark forest metaphor is powerful but incomplete. Civilizations in Cixin’s universe have no governance mechanism. No treaties. No shared institutions. No way to verify intentions. Their only option is silence or destruction.

Organizations operate in a different context. They have contracts, intellectual property law, licensing terms, and access controls. They can choose graduated disclosure rather than binary openness or secrecy.

The organizations that will sustain competitive advantage in an AI-saturated market are not the ones that stop sharing entirely. They are the ones that build deliberate knowledge governance: clear policies about what gets published, what stays internal, and what gets shared under specific terms.

This is not a technology problem. It is a governance problem with technology implications. The dark forest is real. But unlike Cixin’s universe, we can build institutions that make broadcasting survivable.
